Artificial Intelligence, or AI, refers to the development of intelligent machines that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

artificial intelligence

Four types of AI

Machine learning

Machine learning is a branch of AI that involves the use of algorithms and statistical models to enable computer systems to improve their performance on a specific task over time, without being explicitly programmed.

Natural language processing

Natural language processing (commonly abbreviated to NLP) is a subfield of artificial intelligence that focuses on the interaction between computers and human beings through processing natural language.

Robotics and automation

Robotics involves the design, construction, and operation of robots, often powered by AI, to perform tasks (commonly called automations) that are typically dangerous, repetitive, or require high precision.

Computer vision

Computer vision is a field of study within artificial intelligence and computer science that focuses on enabling computers to interpret and understand the visual world through the analysis of digital images and video.

Generative AI

Generative AI is a class of machine learning models that are capable of learning patterns and structures from a given set of data and then use that knowledge to generate new data that is similar in style or content to the original input. This process is achieved by training the model on a large dataset of examples and then using it to create novel instances that are statistically similar to the training data.

How is generative AI used?

Generative AI can be used to create realistic images, videos, and audio, as well as to generate natural language text that can be used for various purposes such as automated writing, translation, or conversation. In addition, generative AI has been used in a wide range of applications, including creating art, designing new products, simulating scenarios, and even generating new scientific hypotheses.

ChatGPT is an example of generative AI

ChatGPT took the world by storm and was for many people their first experience of explicitly using generative AI. ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) developed by OpenAI that can generate human-like responses to natural language prompts and can be used for a wide range of applications, including chatbots, language translation, and automated writing. LLMs similar to ChatGPT are one of the primary tools we use when developing solutions for our clients.

How AI can help you

Our practice focuses on assisting knowledge professionals such as lawyers and accountants make the best of artificial intelligence. Whilst AI has far broader uses than what we describe below, these are the primary ways that our clients can use AI to improve their businesses.

Data analysis and decision making

AI can assist knowledge professionals such as lawyers, accountants, engineers, and architects by analyzing large amounts of data and providing insights to inform decision-making. For example, an AI system can analyse legal documents and case law to identify relevant precedents and provide recommendations for legal strategy, or analyse financial data to help accountants make informed decisions.

Document drafting and review

AI can assist in drafting and reviewing documents, such as legal contracts, engineering plans, or architectural blueprints. AI can review documents for consistency, accuracy, and completeness, and can also identify potential errors or issues before they become problematic. This saves time and reduces the risk of errors, whilst freeing up knowledge professionals to focus on more complex, high-value tasks

Natural language processing

AI can assist in natural language processing, enabling the quick and and accurate extraction of information from a variety of sources, such as legal documents, technical reports, or financial statements. For example, AI can extract key data from a large number of contracts or patents, allowing lawyers and engineers to quickly identify important information and make informed decisions.

Predictive modelling and forecasting

AI can assist in predictive modeling, helping knowledge professionals to forecast outcomes and make more accurate predictions about the likelihood of future events. For example, AI can help lawyers predict the likelihood of a successful outcome in a legal case, or help engineers predict the performance of a new product. This leads to better outcomes for practitioners, organisations and clients.
